Hydrostatic Plumbing Testing
A slow drain leak under the slab feeds the clay that moves the house. The hydrostatic test is how you catch it, and repairing without one is a gamble.

Buried in the engineer's report, one line raises your eyebrow: recommend hydrostatic testing of the sanitary sewer system prior to repair. Another few hundred dollars, for a house that needs piers, to test plumbing that seems fine. It reads like padding. It is closer to the opposite: the cheapest insurance in the whole foundation process.
The leak and movement loop
Under slab drain lines run through the same clay the foundation sits on. Let one leak, even slowly, and it feeds water into a concentrated pocket of soil. Expansive clay swells where it drinks, so the slab above can heave, tilt, or soften its bearing. Movement then bends and cracks aging pipes further, which leaks more water, which moves more clay. House and plumbing take turns making each other worse.
That loop explains a diagnostic clue worth knowing: drought settlement usually shows at the perimeter, while a heaving hump toward the middle of the house points at water arriving from below. When an evaluator sees the second pattern, a hydrostatic test stops being optional.
How the test works
A plumber accesses the sewer system at a cleanout and seals the main line with an inflatable test ball. The drain system is then filled with water to slab level and watched. If the level holds, the system is tight. If it drops, water is escaping somewhere beneath the house, and follow up isolation and camera work narrow down which line and where.
It is a pass or fail instrument, simple by design. The value is what the answer removes from the table: either your plumbing joins the suspect list or it leaves it, and both results change the repair conversation.
When the test gets ordered
Three moments, mostly. Before repair on older homes, because lifting a foundation over an undiscovered leak means the movement engine keeps running under the fresh piers. After any lift, because raising a settled structure flexes the lines beneath it, and reputable contractors and engineers want proof the plumbing survived. And whenever symptoms point below: center of house heave, a stubborn warm or damp spot on the floor, drain smells with no visible cause.
What a failed test means next
Not panic, and not automatically a wrecked budget. A fail means water is escaping; isolation testing then splits the system into segments to find which one, and a camera puts eyes on the defect. From there the conversation moves to under slab plumbing repair, where the real money decisions live: spot repair or reroute, tunnel or breach.
Sequence matters more than speed. If foundation work is also on the menu, the standard order is test, lift, retest, then repair what the retest finds, so nobody pays to fix a line the lift was about to stress anyway.
Published industry cost data for the Georgetown area puts hydrostatic testing at $250 to $600, with isolation and camera work priced beyond that. Set against a repair bill that can reach five figures, it is the least expensive certainty this industry sells. Get the results in writing either way; a documented pass is worth real money when you sell.

The worry comes up often, and the honest answer is that the test fills lines to slab level, similar to the standing water a bad clog creates. A system that cannot hold that is a system that was already leaking under everyday conditions. Ask the plumber to walk you through their procedure if the age of your lines concerns you.
A basic pass or fail test commonly wraps up within an hour or two. If the system fails and you move straight into isolating which segment leaks, plan on a longer visit and a separate line item.

A pass is genuinely useful: it removes drain leaks from the suspect list. Attention then turns to drainage, tree moisture draw, and the ordinary clay cycle. An elevation survey repeated over time will show whether the movement is seasonal or progressive.
