Every foundation quote in Georgetown eventually reduces to a per pier price times a pier count. Contractors quote the first number loudly and the second one quietly, so this guide covers both: what each pier type costs, what you get for the money, and how to keep a comparison honest.
Per pier pricing, by method

A pressed piling is a stack of precast concrete cylinders pressed into the ground one segment at a time, using the weight of your house as the press. Drilled piers are poured in place and need cure time before lifting. Steel piers are driven pipe sections that keep going long after concrete would have stopped.
Depth and refusal, the concept behind the price
Every pier is pushed or drilled until it hits refusal: the point where the ground pushes back hard enough to carry the load. The whole price ladder is really about how deep that point is and what it costs to reach it.
Pressed pilings typically refuse at modest depths in local clay. On the west side, where limestone runs shallow, that refusal point is honest rock and a pressed piling seated on it is excellent value. In deep Blackland clay east and south of I-35, refusal can happen within the same clay that swells and shrinks with the seasons, which means the pier can move with the problem it was meant to solve. Steel earns its premium by driving through the active zone to strata that ignore the weather. That logic, and when it actually applies, is the whole steel vs concrete question.
Why per pier price alone misleads
Two bids, same house. Bid A: 16 pressed pilings at $450, so $7,200. Bid B: 9 steel piers at $1,400, so $12,600. Which is cheaper depends entirely on whether 16 shallow piers in this soil outperform 9 deep ones, and that is a soil question, not a price question.
Watch for the three ways per pier framing distorts a decision:
Count inflation. A low per pier price recovers its margin through quantity. Piers spaced every 4 feet instead of every 6 to 8 should prompt a why.
Scope trimming. The cheap bid may exclude the engineer letter, the permit, the post-lift elevation survey, or the plumbing test that others include. Total the whole job, not the pier line.
Warranty weighting. A pier with a strong, transferable warranty from an established company is worth a real premium over the same pier from a truck and a phone number. Warranties fail when companies do, so longevity of the firm is part of the product.
Getting an apples to apples comparison
Give every bidder the same starting point. The cleanest version: pay for an independent engineer evaluation first ($400 to $650) and hand each contractor the same report, so all bids price one scope. Then require each quote to state method, pier count, spacing, expected depth, per pier price, what happens if piers go deeper than estimated, everything included beyond piers, and warranty terms in writing.
Depth overruns deserve special attention. Some companies price a pier to a stated depth and charge per foot beyond it; others price to refusal regardless. Neither is wrong, but you need to know which contract you are signing before the crew finds soft ground.
Once the per pier math makes sense, zoom back out to the full repair cost picture, because piers are usually most of the invoice but rarely all of it.
