Watering a slab of concrete sounds like satire until you understand what the water is actually for. On expansive clay, your foundation's worst enemy is not moisture. It is moisture swing: soil that soaks in the wet months and desiccates in the hot ones, lifting and dropping the slab's edges a little more every cycle. A watering program does not water the concrete. It keeps the soil beside the concrete from ever fully drying out, which flattens the cycle that cracks houses. It is the cheapest foundation work you will ever do, and most people who do it still do it slightly wrong.
The goal: damp, never soggy, never bone dry
Print this sentence on the inside of your skull: the target is consistently damp soil at the foundation edge, all the way around, all summer. Not wet. Not muddy. Damp, like a wrung out sponge. You are not trying to push the foundation up; you are trying to stop the soil from shrinking away from it during the drying months. Consistency beats volume every time: a modest soak on a steady schedule outperforms occasional flooding by a wide margin.
Soaker hoses, done correctly
The standard tool is the humble soaker hose, and placement is where most setups go wrong.
Distance: 12 to 18 inches out from the slab edge, not against it. Water against the foundation finds any gap between dried soil and concrete and runs straight down it, wetting the deep soil unevenly and accomplishing little near the surface. A hose a foot or so out wets a band of soil that moisture then wicks evenly toward and under the slab edge. If a visible gap has already opened between soil and slab in high summer, that gap is your evidence the program started late, not a place to aim the hose.
Coverage: all sides that dry, which usually means all sides. The classic mistake is watering the shady front bed and skipping the west wall, where the sun does its worst work. Uneven watering recreates the exact differential movement you are trying to prevent. Chain multiple hoses if needed and treat south and west exposures as the priority runs.
Depth of thought, not depth of trench. Lay hoses on the surface under 2 to 3 inches of mulch. Mulch slashes evaporation, hides the hose, and keeps the drip zone stable. Burying hoses deeper mostly makes leaks invisible.
Pressure: low and slow. Soakers want roughly a quarter turn of the spigot. At full pressure they spray, pool, and die young.
The schedule, by season
Clay does not read calendars, so treat these as starting points and adjust to what the soil tells you. Push a long screwdriver into the soil a foot from the slab: slides in with modest effort, moisture is fine; needs a hammer, you are late.

Mornings beat evenings (less evaporation than afternoon, less overnight sogginess against the house). A cheap hose timer converts good intentions into an actual program, which matters because the houses that get hurt are the ones watered enthusiastically for two weeks after a scary article and then forgotten.
Drip systems and other upgrades
A dedicated drip irrigation zone, quarter inch emitter line looped around the foundation at the same 12 to 18 inch offset, run off a controller, is the grown up version: even output, schedules that survive vacations, and no hoses to trip over. Sprinkler systems, for the record, do not count. Lawn heads water grass roots for minutes at a time; foundation soil needs slow, deep soaking the turf never sees. If you have an irrigation system, ask an irrigator about a dedicated drip zone for the beds rather than pointing rotors at the slab.
Overwatering, the equal and opposite mistake
Every year someone reads about foundation watering and proceeds to swamp their slab. Saturated clay swells, and a heavily watered side can heave upward against drier neighbors, which is the same differential movement wearing a wetter costume. Soggy soil against the house also invites the drainage problems and moisture intrusion covered in drainage correction. Signals you have overshot: standing water, moss, mud that stays slick a day after watering, or a musty smell in adjacent rooms. The fix is a shorter cycle, not abandonment. And if one area stays wet without your help, stop watering it and start asking why; a plumbing leak under the slab does its own watering.
Drought restrictions, the honest complication
The years when watering matters most are exactly the years the city tightens outdoor watering rules. Georgetown manages its own utility, and drought stages typically restrict schedules and methods. Practical notes: restrictions commonly treat low volume soaker and drip watering differently from sprinkler irrigation, hand watering usually stays broadly allowed, and stages change, so check the city utility's current rules rather than assuming.
