Stand outside during the next hard rain and watch what your lot does with the water. The moisture seesaw
Blackland clay punishes both extremes. Soak one side of a slab and the clay swells and lifts it; let summer bake the other side and it shrinks and drops. The goal of drainage work is not a dry foundation. It is a foundation whose soil moisture stays roughly even, season to season, side to side. Surface water control handles the wet half of that equation, and a watering program handles the dry half.
What a correction actually includes
A drainage contractor works down a short, unglamorous list. Regrading so soil falls away from the house on every elevation, often by adding and compacting select fill against the beam. Downspout extensions or buried leaders that carry roof water well away from the perimeter. Swales, shallow graded channels that intercept water crossing the yard and steer it around the house. Catch basins and area drains where a low spot cannot be graded out.
The audit matters as much as the shovel work. Edging that dams water inside beds, a neighbor's runoff arriving at your fence line, an A/C condensate line dripping at the slab for years: small sources add up in clay.
Why water comes before piers

The stubborn cases, water seeping at the slab edge days after rain, a side yard that never dries, an uphill lot draining through yours, call for subsurface collection.
